Mar Adentro Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The institutional mission is to promote, participate, and stimulate actions to produce and improve knowledge about aquatic ecosystems, aiming to ensure the integrity of natural processes, environmental balance, and benefits for today’s citizens and future generations. The institute has a multidisciplinary team to elaborate and develop (1) research projects, (2) scientific promotion and environmental education, and (3) production and publication of books, magazines, videos, cartoons, and photos. Several projects have been conducted towards ocean conservation, including the Ilhas do Rio Project (IDR) since 2011, one of the Champions working to protect the Cagarras Islands and Surrounding Waters Hope Spot, encompassing 57k hectares.
IDR works in partnership with government agencies to foster the protection of coastal areas in Rio de Janeiro. Through an advocacy effort, the IDR supports local environmental agencies in establishing and strengthening marine protected areas, based on science, as ocean-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The advocacy work focuses on Agenda 30×30, Target 3 of the Convention on Biological Diversity and how local actions and solutions contribute to achieving national and global goals.
IDR also engages in international networks and high-level forums to emphasize the significance of actions taken by governments in the Global South regarding global ocean conservation agendas
The International Panel for Ocean Sustainability is one of the examples that IDR has been working with. Also, within the scope of IDR, Mar Adentro Institute has become a Knowledge Partner of the Oceans20 (O20), a G20 official engagement group. The project co-hosted side events on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty (BBNJ), Ocean Action and Solutions in National Determined Contributions (NDCs), and Resilient Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) during the G20 Brazilian Presidency 2024. IDR is proud to have contributed to the O20 final Communiqué, which influenced the G20 Environment and Climate Ministers Declaration and the G20 Leaders’ Final Declaration, especially regarding the BBNJ agreement. The O20 recommendations were also considered in the bilateral commitments between Brazil and France, focusing on “Nice to Belém (UNOC/COP 30).
At UNOC 2025, the IDR team aims to connect with partners to share experiences and challenges related to science-to-policy, seeking synergies and opportunities for collaboration and fundraising. IDR will be hosting and supporting the following side events:
